Château de Commarque, located in the valley of the River Beune between the towns of Sarlat and Les Eyzies, is a must see when traveling to the Dordogne.
The castles keep, a 16th century addition still stands as part of the castles original 12th century structure. It was intended as fortified village as well as chateaux.
The chateau still holds much of its original mystique. Spending the 200 years prior to the 1970's underneath vegetation has left it rather untouched. Abandoned as casualty to the Religious Wars of France from the 18th century on it was basically unknown until locals rediscovered it and cleared away the overgrowth allowing the public to visit it once again.
The Chateaux also has several knight towers and homes carved into the areas natural rock. The rock face below the castle is home to troglodyte caves worth taking a look at.
