Summer Exhibition 1st of June - 31st of August
The town of Sarlat takes the months of June, July, and August to display the works of a particular artist.
In 2003 the 'Dali in time' exhibit focused on the famed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali. The timing of the show coincided with the release of the short animated piece Destino on which he collaborated with Walt Disney. It was also only 4 short years after Dali's death. The time reference in the title of the exhibit is a play on words as Dali's most famous work was The Persisitence of Memory, it contained several time pieces featured in the painting.
In the following years the town has had a different theme each year. 2004 was Mireio. In 2005 they moved on to Toutain. Toutain is of French birth but provides a variety to his work due to the fact that he left home at age 16 and had made a point of being a world-traveling artist.
Bodegas 1st of June - 31st of August
Bodegas are street festivals that occur annually. The whole town celebrates it's history as well as its modern life with music, food, games, dancing and general revelry. There is one in almost every town. While to numerous to list here they are definitely worth checking out. Once you decide on a town to stay in while you are in the Dordogne it is worth contacting the local tourism office to determine where a nearby Bodega is being held.
The street festivals, usually held in the summer, are so fun it might be worth doing it the other way around. Call the tourism office to determine where the festivals will be while you are in Dordogne and that will decide what town you are staying in.
Bonaguil Son et Lumiere 7th - 25th of August
Held nightly in the busy summer season, the Son et Lumiere at the Bonaguil castle is impressive.
The Son et Lumiere is a light and sound show involving fireworks and lighting displays that come out of the castle as well as several images and lights displayed on the outer wall of the castle.
The Son et Lumieres are held through out Dordogne and all of France. While most are not as impressive or extensive as the one at Bonaguil, they usually depict the local areas history and culture while displaying it impressively through a modern show of lights and sound.
