Bastille Day 14th of July
Bastille day that is held on July 14th is celebrated with large festivals and nighttime fire works display.
Similar to Americas’ 4th July, Bastille Day is a celebration of the storming of the bastille by the French during the French Revolution. Known officially as " National Holiday " or "Fete Nationale it most commonly referred to as the 14th of July or "quatorze juillet".
The day is also celebrated for the fact that since 1991 the president has traditionally pardoned many minor offenders on this day, usually traffic offenses.
The largest celebration in all of France occurs on Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris in front of the President of the Republic.
The largest celebration in Dordogne is generally the fireworks display held in Bergerac.
Cahors Blues Festival 17th - 21st of July
The Cahors blues festival was started in 1981 by Gerard Tertre. Originally this true blues afficianado started the festival with himself and few friends as a small venue to promote blues music.
Now in 2008 it will celebrate it 27th year. While Gerard Tetre is no longer with us to celebrate the event he would be pleased to see it grow in numbers and even more so in musical displays every year.
Over the years the festival has seen performances by blues legend including JB Hutto, Jimmy Witherspoon, Guy Laffite, Wild Bill Davis, Johnny Copeland, Sandra Reaves Phillips, Screamin Jay Hawkins, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Albert Collins, BB King, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Melvin Taylor, JJ Milteau, Jimmy Smmith, Bernard Alison, and many more.
This years’ festival which runs Tuesday July 17th through Saturday July 21st will feature many more of the premier blues musicians.
